The Triple Helix at Harvard University

TTH Harvard is continually seeking talented, dynamic individuals interested in the intersection between science and society. From writing and editorial work to fundraising and science policy events, there are many ways in which you can become involved in TTH:

  • Writer (see 'Get Involved' for Article Proposal Form)

    • Anyone can be a writer, as long as the proposed article topic fulfills the vision of TTH, a determination that will be made by the Editor-in-Chief. Writers are free to write in any literary cycle (Fall, Spring or both) but once a writer has been assigned an Associate Editor in a cycle, s/he commits to seeing the article through that cycle.
    • Writers have two major opportunities to make an international impact, based on recommendations by the chapter Editorial staff: (1) Present a poster, based on one's article, at the Triple Helix Poster Session of the February AAAS Annual Meeting, one of the largest scientific meetings in the world. (2) Have one's article selected for the International Feature Pool (IFP) and potentially be published by other chapters worldwide.
  • Associate Editor

    • No experience is necessary to become an AE, but strong writing ability and editing skills (as assessed by the application) are viewed very favorably. AEs are selected by the Editor-in-Chief, in consultation with the President and the chapter's Senior Literary Editor, if there is one. AEs are free to take on other roles in the chapter and to write as well.
    • AEs are especially encouraged to write Op-Eds for each issue of the journal based on the articles published, with the understanding that each Op-Ed represents the view of the individual AE and not of the Editorial staff as a whole.
  • Production Editor

    • TTH Harvard aims to become a Self-Producing Chapter for either the Fall 2009 or the Spring 2010 literary cycle. To make this possible, Production Editors will work under the Executive Production Editor (EPE) to realize the layout and design of each issue of the Review.
    • No experience necessary. All training will be conducted by the EPE near the start of the literary cycle. Interested PEs can request additional training by the International Production Staff through teleconference workshops.
  • Science Policy Associate

    • Science Policy Associates work together with the Vice President of Science Policy to organize thought-provoking events each year. These include:
      • Faculty Chat Dinner Series: An intimate monthly dinner discussion with a professor whose work spans both the sciences and the humanities, held in one of the House dining halls.
      • Theme: Each year, the International Science Policy Team will propose a theme which chapters program events around. The Fall 2009 theme has yet to be decided.
      • Science Cafés: Science cafés are live events that involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone in the wider Boston/Cambridge community. Resources from the growing worldwide community of science cafe organizers can be found here.
      • Anything you can imagine: Creativity is highly prized in our Science Policy Associates, albeit tempered with pragmatism. We expect our associates to be actively involved in generating event ideas as well as carrying them out.
    • TTH Harvard's Science Policy Division is a partner of the Policy Center of Science, Technology and Public Policy of the Roosevelt Institution, Harvard chapter (http://harvard.rooseveltinstitution.org).
  • Finance Associate

    • Fundraising is a critical role for TTH Harvard. In order for the journal to transition to print in the Fall 2009 cycle, we are looking to recruit creative, aggressive individuals with a willingness to solicit donations and advertisements from all sources. Prior interest in business is not a prerequisite - a willingness to think outside the box and discover new avenues of funding is.
    • Finance Associates work together with the Vice President of Finance and/or with the National Finance/Marketing team to solicit donations to the chapter, funding for science policy events and advertising bundles for the journal at the chapter or international level. Finance Associates are thus encouraged to develop and maintain relationships with university departments, hospitals and major technology companies.
